5G Towers: The Plan Is Halfway There, Permit Complexities Need to Be Overcome

The 5G Towers installation plan, to be implemented under the PNRR, is proceeding on schedule. INWIT General Manager Diego Galli spoke to “Milano Finanza” about the next steps to be taken.

The 5G Towers installation plan, funded with 345 million euros by the PNRR, is already halfway there: INWIT is committed to bringing its towers to 1,385 white areas, where mobile connectivity was not available and which would not have been included in the normal investment plans, as they are areas of market failure. However, although in line with the objectives set by the Plan, to achieve the goal within the expected timeframe, there are several complexities to overcome:

“It is essential that the simplifications already adopted at a national level by the Government and Parliament are implemented by local administrations; too many municipal regulations still do not allow for an adequate process in the construction of infrastructures, limiting their location in areas that are not useful for coverage purposes, such as cemeteries and landfills”

– Diego Galli, General Manager of INWIT.

The support of mayors and local administrators, with whom INWIT maintains a relationship of constant collaboration, is therefore essential. INWIT has in fact signed the memorandum of understanding with UNCEM (National Union of Municipalities, Communities and Mountain Entities) and another with ANCI (National Association of Italian Municipalities), Infratel and the Department for Digital Transformation. Finally, with the Presidency of the Council, we met with over 500 Mayors for the presentation of the PNRR’s 5G Italy Plan to the interested Municipalities.
