INWIT enables the smart transport revolution: from underground railways to roads, from tunnels to motorways

31 October 2025

Multi-operator connectivity thanks to digital infrastructure

With its multi-operator digital infrastructure, INWIT is enabling the transformation of the world of transport: from underground railways to roads, road and motorway tunnels, and large railway stations, our shared digital infrastructure, towers and DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems) are transforming daily urban and extra-urban travel into an increasingly smart digital experience.

THE CRUCIAL ROLE OF DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURES

Smart Mobility is not just about means of transport, but the entire mobility ecosystem. Thanks to digital technology, data and connectivity, the goal is to make the movement of people and goods more efficient, sustainable, safe and integrated. Our towers and indoor multi-operator DAS (Distributed Antenna System) coverage systems make this possible.

METRO SYSTEMS: THE NEW FRONTIER OF UNDERGROUND CONNECTIVITY

Enabling 4G/5G connectivity in underground tunnels and stations not only guarantees passengers a stable and fast connection for working, browsing or streaming, but also paves the way for crucial services, such as security.

The main services enabled by digital and shared infrastructure:

  • Mobile ticketing and real-time information on delays and routes.
  • Intelligent video surveillance and real-time monitoring for emergency and crowd management.
  • IoT sensors to monitor the vital parameters of infrastructure (tunnels, tracks) and trains, enabling predictive maintenance.
  • Support for additional services such as public Wi-Fi and environmental air quality monitoring.

INWIT’S MAJOR PROJECTS IN THE UNDERGROUND

THE BLUE LINE M4 IN MILAN:

From Linate to San Cristoforo, via San Babila, we have completed multi-operator coverage across the entire Blue Line – M4 in Milan. The blue line is thus the first to be entirely covered by 5G in Italy and among the first in Europe. A DAS infrastructure capable of providing service to all telco operators.

The system includes:

  • 21 stations
  • 15 km of tunnels
  • 400 remote units
  • 1,100+ mini-antennas
  • 25 km of fibre optics

THE CAPITAL’S UNDERGROUND SYSTEMS WITH ROMA 5G

Technology at the service of people, a model of urban transformation that combines innovation, heritage and digital inclusion: all this is the Roma 5G project. It is being implemented by Smart City Roma, the INWIT Group company that is transforming the capital into an increasingly smart city.

Starting with the underground:

  • 75 underground stations with 4G/5G coverage (Lines A, B, B1, C)
  • 3,000+ mini-antennas
  • 250 km+ of fibre optic cable
  • 1,000+ 5G/4G remote units
  • 68 km of tunnels
  • ~ 150 environmental monitoring probes

SMART STATIONS FROM NORTH TO SOUTH AND BEYOND

With its DAS systems, INWIT has enabled 5G-ready connectivity in some of Italy’s major railway stations managed by Grandi Stazioni Rail. The infrastructure is already active in Roma Tiburtina, Napoli Centrale, Verona Porta Nuova, Torino Porta Nuova, Venezia Mestre, Venezia Santa Lucia, Bologna Centrale and Firenze Santa Maria Novella1. And Rome’s Termini Station has become the first major Italian station to offer more stable and faster connections in multi-operator 5G, with:

  • 115,000 square metres enabled in 5G
  • 125 mini-antennas
  • 8 kilometres of fibre optic cable.

Coverage extends to all high-traffic areas, such as the large entrance hall, the platforms, the gallery adjacent to the platforms, the basement leading to the underground with the shopping arcade, the terrace with shops and restaurants, and the entire covered area of the new car park.

In addition, with our digital and shared infrastructure, we have also enabled:

  • 1,000+ kilometres of road and motorway tunnels with approximately 700 radio-electrical devices
  • 20+ car parks enabled with DAS

From large cities to underground transport networks, from roads and motorways to railways, INWIT’s digital and shared infrastructure contributes every day to making Italian mobility smarter, safer and more connected.
