EIB-INWIT Agreement: €350 million for the development of digital telecommunications infrastructure

A financing initiative to enhance mobile connectivity and support digitalization in Italy, including rural areas.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has granted INWIT a €350 million loan to promote digitalization and improve mobile coverage in Italy, with a particular focus on rural areas. The agreement was signed today in Rome by Gelsomina Vigliotti, EIB Vice President, and Diego Galli, General Manager of INWIT.
The financing supports the development of macro-grid telecommunications infrastructure, including raw land and rooftop towers, to enable mobile network operators’ connectivity, including 5G technology and fixed wireless access (FWA). Additionally, investments will be allocated to the deployment of micro-grid infrastructure, both outdoor – such as small cells – and indoor, through multi-operator Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS). The goal is to enhance mobile connectivity in strategic locations such as hospitals, museums, shopping centers, metro stations, and highway tunnels.
Gelsomina Vigliotti, EIB Vice President, stated:
“This financing confirms the EIB’s commitment to supporting the development of digital infrastructure in Italy, fostering technological growth and the transition to increasingly advanced and efficient connectivity. The agreement further strengthens the collaboration between the EIB and INWIT, reaffirming the Bank’s strategic role in supporting telecommunications and promoting digital innovation in the country.”
Diego Galli, General Manager of INWIT, commented:
“This agreement represents further recognition of our business model and the strategic value of our investment plan in digital and shared infrastructure, capable of bringing economic and industrial efficiency to the value chain for the benefit of our customers. This reinforces the already strong and long-standing cooperation between INWIT and the EIB.”
Thanks to this agreement, INWIT will be able to further accelerate the deployment of cutting-edge infrastructure, contributing to the expansion of connectivity across the entire national territory and supporting Italy’s digital transformation.
