“ROMA 5G” HITS A MAJOR MILESTONE BRINGING FREE PUBLIC WI-FI TO AN INITIAL 55 SQUARES ACROSS THE CAPITAL
Coverage now complete across all 27 stations on metro line A
Rome, September 15, 2025 – The “Roma 5G” project reaches a new milestone with the inauguration of free public Wi-Fi and video surveillance cameras in the first 55 squares of the Capital and the completion of coverage of the entire metro line A. The project, which plans to cover a total of 100 squares with free Wi-Fi and cameras in the coming months, aims to transform Rome into a cutting-edge smart city, offering new ways to enjoy the city and its services. Implemented by INWIT Group’s Smart City Roma company, the project is proceeding according to schedule and is being enhanced with important new features for citizens and tourists.
There are currently 26 squares equipped with Wi-Fi 6 and 5G-connected cameras for urban security already in operation. In another 22 squares, the Wi-Fi infrastructure has already been wired and is awaiting activation by October, while 7 squares are under construction. Overall, 230 cameras and 280 Wi-Fi 6 access points have been installed, with over 10 km of fiber. The Wi-Fi network has speeds of up to 300 Mbps and offers simplified login via email, seamless connection in all squares, and a 14-day timeout.
Approximately 1,800 IoT sensors have already been installed in public squares to monitor the environment and air quality. In addition, 4G/5G coverage has been completed on metro line A, with 27 stations and tunnels, for a total of over 85 km of fiber optics and approximately 1,500 mini-antennas installed, following the inauguration of the first nine Jubilee stations on April 1. Work is already underway on lines B1 and B, while line C is in the design phase. Voice and data traffic in Rome’s metro system is managed by Smart City Roma’s new radio equipment room (BTS Hotel) in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele station, one of the largest and most advanced in Europe.
Overall, the Roma 5G project involves enabling free Wi-Fi connectivity, thanks to over 850 free Wi-Fi hotspots distributed across 100 squares, 4G/5G coverage of 75 existing metro stations (lines A, B, B1, C) and related tunnels, indoor 4G/5G coverage of 7 public buildings in Rome, over 1,800 IoT sensors for environmental and air quality monitoring, 2,000 ultra-broadband connected cameras for urban security, the installation of 4G/5G small cells according to operators’ needs, and 150 probes for environmental monitoring in metro stations. In addition to all this, another 8 stations will be added in the coming years as part of the expansion project for metro line C.
The inauguration ceremony for public Wi-Fi took place today in Piazza del Popolo on the first day of Rome Future Week (September 15-20), the third edition of the event focusing on the future and innovation of the city of Rome. The ceremony was attended by Roberto Gualtieri, Mayor of Rome, Diego Galli, General Manager of INWIT, Michele Gamberini, CEO of Smart City Roma, and Antonino Ruggiero, CEO of Boldyn Networks Italia.
HOW Wi-Fi ACCESS WORKS
Once logged into the public network “ROMACAPITALE_WIFI” and entered their email address, citizens and visitors will be able to move between the various squares in the capital where the service is available. Only if they do not access the Wi-Fi for 14 days, they will need to log in again.
