Science Based Target Initiative (SBTI) approves Net Zero Target by 2040

Rome, 23 February 2024 – INWIT, Italy’s leading tower operator, has obtained validation of its Net Zero target by 2040 by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), an international initiative that aims to verify that companies’ commitment to combating climate change is in line with international climate agreements.

As envisaged in its Sustainability Plan, the company has defined an ambitious climate strategy aimed at reducing to zero (Net Zero) its direct and indirect emissions of CO2, in line with international climate change agreements (Paris Agreement) aimed at limiting the increase in global warming to 1.5°C.

It will reduce its emissions to zero by purchasing and producing electricity from renewable sources and investing in technological solutions to make its energy consumption more efficient, as well as by involving the supply chain with a view to guaranteeing goods and services with an increasingly lower environmental impact.

INWIT already has a 2030 (near term) emission reduction target validated by SBTi and, with this new challenging long-term goal, further strengthens its commitment to the transition to a low-carbon economy.

On this path towards Net Zero, INWIT intends to contribute, from right now, to the reduction of emissions at a global level, by financing climate action projects, through certified carbon credits, achieving Carbon Neutrality starting from 2024 emissions.

The Science Based Targets Initiative is promoted by some of the most authoritative institutions in the fight against climate change: United Nations Global Compact, the World Resource Institute, WWF, CDP and We Mean Business, a global non-profit coalition that collaborates with businesses.

The initiative was launched so as to verify that the strategies and Climate Actions defined by companies are in line with the indications of the scientific community and international agreements to combat climate change.

“After having been upgraded to leadership level in the CDP Climate Change, the validation of the Net Zero target is another valuable step on the path undertaken by INWIT – said Michelangelo Suigo, External Relations, Communication & Sustainability Director at INWIT -. Our business model is sustainable, enabling more streamlined development along the entire value chain and combining industrial, economic, social and environmental efficiency. Sustainability is an integral part of our business strategy, which is aimed at considering, in the role of Tower as a service, also the impact of our actions on people and the environment, with a view to creating value for all our stakeholders, towards sustainable success”.
