A new app – “XRAN Green Tool” – has born from the collaboration of INWIT and JMA Wireless. Result of their mutual interest in the theme of sustainability and “green” technologies, this application shows the total energy savings that can be can be obtained by using a single network node, shared among the different operators to whom “DAS” (Distributed Antenna System) micro-coverage solutions can be made available.

INWIT’s goal is to reduce the ever greater energy consumption of traditional network nodes. The exponential upsurge in traffic data, inndeed, makes the installation of new additional nodes essential. Thanks to XRAN and JMA Wireless’s support, it is now possibile to reduce CO2 emissions and increase the performance of new technologies, including 5G, making mobile telephony increasingly eco-sustainable. 

Green Tool highlights energy savings with respect to traditional network nodes, financial savings on energy expenditure, the CO2 emissions avoided.  But there is more: using appropriate equivalences obtained from studies, the app also counts the number of trees saved due to increased efficiency of the systems, in terms of absorption of the emissions of the structures.

The use of the XRAN solution in INWIT systems enforce synergy and interaction between two leading mobile telecommunications companies that pursue energy savings objectives and seek to reduce the environmental impact of wireless connections, laying the ground for a sustainable implementation of next-generation 5G technology.

The energy saving achieved with the XRAN solution is calculated with respect to traditional network nodes. The savings on electricity consumed is calculated in addition to heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Each year, a energy savings of over 4,000kWh for each cell can be obtained using this app. This value corresponds to a bill savings of 600 euros, considering an average value of 0.15€/kWh as electricity cost in the various European countries according to Eurostat estimates.
