An interview with Giampiero Mongatti, Barberino di Mugello Mayor
For the column “๐๐ฏ๐ง๐ณ๐ข๐ด๐ต๐ณ๐ถ๐ต๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ช๐ท๐ช๐ด๐ฆ ๐ฆ ๐๐ช๐จ๐ช๐ต๐ข๐ญ๐ช-๐๐ข๐ค๐ค๐ช๐ข๐ฎ๐ฐ ๐๐ฆ๐ต๐ฆ”, dedicated to collaborations between INWIT and the town and cities of Italy, we had the opportunity to interview the Mayor of Barberino di Mugello (Florence), Giampiero Mongatti, who explained how important the collaboration with INWIT has been to implement helpful interventions to overcome the Digital Divide through the network coverage of the entire area.
A lively and welcoming area, but also one full of challenges from an infrastructural point of view, with disparities between the urban areas and the hinterland suburbs: a very particular case, underlined by the mayor, is the one of the town of Galliano, which was completely lacking both mobile signal and internet connection.
The town, within the framework of the Pnrr’s Italy 5G Plan, has joined forces with INWIT to work on reducing regional inequalities and its Digital Divide: INWIT’s digital and shared infrastructure for the new-generation, low environmental impact 5G mobile network has made it possible to cover the entire area. The absence of signal, in this small Tuscan village, had brought the story on the major national and international newspapers, thus becoming “representative” for all those territories in Digital Divide both at regional and national level.
