Speed, innovative services, low latency: this is Italy running on 5G
5G technology will be the main growth driver for the digital market in Italy.
“5G Italy – The Global Meeting in Rome” a conference organised by CNIT was held in Rome, with a view to take stock of the development of 5G in Italy. The event partner INWIT, gave an account of its contribution to bringing the connections of the future to Italy.
5G technology will be the main growth driver for the digital market in Italy.
From the cloud, to the Internet of Things (IoT), through Industry 4.0 and Cybersecurity, the fifth generation of mobile connections will enable the spread of new digital services in our country which will allow companies, citizens, and users to take bolder steps towards the future.
The development of 5G in Italy was the focus of “5G Italy – The Global Meeting in Rome”, the three-day event promoted by CNIT, which was held from 3 to 5 December at the CNR headquarters, in partnership with INWIT.
5G will be a real revolution in the field of mobile telephony. A truly effective implementation calls for the spread of new infrastructure, whether towers for outdoor spaces or smaller Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) for indoor ones.
With 5G, DAS become essential. The poor penetration of the signal in enclosed spaces, the need for stability and signal strength, can only be ensured with these micro-coverages to support the primary network of towers.
Giovanni Ferigo, CEO of INWIT
Therefore, the 5G network departs completely from previous infrastructure and thus requires a redefinition of the entire architecture of the connections.
Infrastructure for tomorrow’s connections
With more capable antennas, more advanced technologies, integration with optical fibre (backhauling), offered by 5G, we are experiencing much more than a simple technological leap in performance improvement, as happened for example in the transition from 2G to 3G and then to 4G.
With the new generation of connections, instead, we will see a complete paradigm shift, which will redesign the use of the devices connected to mobile connections.
INWIT support the development of new network infrastructures to boost 5G development, allowing Italy to stand at the forefront of this new technology and its countless applications in the coming years. This leadership that can foster the growth of the entire national economy.
Giovanni Ferigo, CEO of INWIT
Today, INWIT is already committed to making railway stations, villages, museums, hotels and shopping centres “5G Ready”. In the coming years, it will contribute to the 5G network deployment in the whole country thanks to its know-how.
The social role of 5G
Beyond its massive technological impact with greater navigation speeds, low latency and innovative services, the spread of 5G networks will play – in a morphologically complex country like Italy – a real social role, allowing all our fellow citizens to enjoy solid and secure connections.
Investments in the new network also serve to break down the digital divide in our country in all regions, with new services available in all sectors.
Paola Pisano, Italian Minister of Innovation
This is a challenge that INWIT has already accepted, for example, by bringing its micro-coverage to some of the most beautiful villages in Italy, already capable of providing high-quality services to citizens and tourists.
A further step to give substance to the connections of tomorrow’s Italy.
